Why teach cardinal directions using a classroom plan instead of a real map?

A classroom plan removes every unfamiliar variable, no unknown streets, no unfamiliar landmarks, so a child can focus completely on the direction rule itself before applying it to a map of somewhere they've never seen. Once a student can consistently name north, south, east, and west on a floor plan of their own room, that same rule transfers directly to the neighborhood, compass rose, and route-planning worksheets in the Maps topic.
