Why is a real family member used as the source instead of a textbook passage?

History content for second grade usually comes from a printed passage the child reads, but a family interview instead makes the child's own relative the primary source, which is both more personal and, for many families, the only place this specific history exists at all: a grandparent's own memories aren't written down anywhere else for a child to read.

How does this worksheet connect to Family Relationships (Family Trees)?

Family Interview asks a student to gather new information directly from a relative, while Family Relationships asks them to read and interpret a family tree that's already been put together, two complementary skills: collecting family history firsthand, and organizing family history that's already been recorded.
