Beginning Blends Review
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Beginning Blends Review" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on consonants, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and consonant blends never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this consonant blends worksheet?
⌄
Say each picture name together and stretch the first two sounds before your child writes. Keep the blend bank in view. Check with the answer key and say any missed word again slowly.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Fill in the bubble for the beginning blend of twelve pictures, mixing l and r blends. A blend is two consonants side by side. You say both sounds, like the b and l in blue. The directions on the page read: Look at each picture and say its name. Then, fill in the bubble next to the blend it begins with. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this consonant blends worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade consonants, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with consonant blends. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a consonant blend?
⌄
A blend is two consonants side by side where you still hear both sounds, like f and r in frog or c and l in clap. Children say the two sounds together quickly.
What is the difference between l blends and r blends?
⌄
In an l blend the second letter is l, as in bl, cl, fl, gl, pl and sl. In an r blend it is r, as in br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr and tr. The sort page asks children to listen for which one they hear.
How do I help my child read a blend word?
⌄
Say each sound slowly, then push them together: f, r, og becomes frog. Have your child say the picture name aloud before writing, and stretch the start if the blend is hard to hear.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All ten consonant blends sheets have an answer key.
How many 1st Grade consonant blends worksheets are there?
⌄
10 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are consonant blends worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 1st Grade students, roughly ages 6-7. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these consonant blends worksheets aligned to Common Core?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
