Read, Circle and Write Wh Words

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Read, Circle and Write Wh Words" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.3.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on consonants, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and consonant digraphs never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

⌄

Have your child say the digraph sound before reading each word. Point out that the two letters make one sound. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read six wh words like whale, wheel and pinwheel, circle wh and write each under its picture. A digraph is two letters that make one sound. In when, the letters wh make one sound. The directions on the page read: Read each word and circle the letters wh. Then, write each word under its picture. The answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this consonant digraphs worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade consonants, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with consonant digraphs. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a consonant digraph?

⌄

A digraph is two consonants that make one new sound, like sh in ship or ch in chair. You do not hear the s and the h on their own. Knowing the common digraphs is part of RF.1.3.A.

How is a digraph different from a blend?

⌄

In a blend you hear both letters, like b and l in block. In a digraph the two letters make a single sound, like th in thumb.

Why is ph on a 1st grade page?

⌄

Ph makes the f sound in words like phone, photo and trophy. It is less common than sh, ch and th, so it comes after them, but children meet it early in everyday words.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All eight digraph sheets have an answer key.

How many 1st Grade consonant digraphs worksheets are there?

⌄

8 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are consonant digraphs worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 1st Grade students, roughly ages 6-7. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these consonant digraphs worksheets aligned to Common Core?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
