Problem and Solution at the Beach

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Problem and Solution at the Beach" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on story elements, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and problem and solution never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this problem and solution worksheet?

⌄

Read each mini story aloud together and ask what went wrong. Let your child point to the fix before drawing the line. Any sensible new fix counts; the answer key gives a sample.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Match problems to solutions in 3 mini stories at the beach, then write your own fix. A problem is something that goes wrong in a story. A solution is a way to fix it. The directions on the page read: Read each story. Then, circle the sentence that tells the problem. Then, draw a line to the solution. Then, write a new way to fix one problem. The answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this problem and solution worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade story elements, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with problem and solution. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a problem and solution in a story?

⌄

The problem is something that goes wrong, like a trash can that is too full. The solution is how it gets fixed, like taking the trash out.

Where are the mini stories set?

⌄

Each sheet keeps its three mini stories in one place: at home, at school, at the park, on the farm, at the beach, in the snow or on a car trip. A familiar setting helps children picture what went wrong.

What if my child writes a different fix?

⌄

That is the point of the last step. Any fix that would solve the problem counts, and the answer key gives a sample.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All seven problem and solution sheets have an answer key.

What are story elements in 1st grade?

⌄

Story elements are the main parts of a story: the characters (who), the setting (where), the problem (what goes wrong) and the solution (how it gets fixed). 1st graders describe the characters, setting and major events using key details (RL.1.3).

What is a story map?

⌄

A story map is a page of boxes, one for each part of the story. After reading, children write a few words or draw a picture in each box, which helps them retell the story in order.

How do I help my child find the problem in a story?

⌄

Ask what went wrong, then ask how it got fixed. On the problem and solution pages, each mini story is only two or three sentences, so children can find both parts quickly and then think of a fix of their own.
