Summarize the Story of the Snowy Bus Stop

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Summarize the Story of the Snowy Bus Stop" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RL.3.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on main idea and details, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and summarizing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this summarizing worksheet?

⌄

Read the passage together, then ask your child to tell it to you in three sentences before writing. Talk about why the wrong summaries are too small or miss the ending. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Summarize an original story about a snowy bus stop with a Somebody Wanted But So Then chart. A summary tells the most important parts of a story in a few sentences. Read the story and think about what matters most. The directions on the page read: Read the story. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Write a few words in each row of the chart. Then, circle the letter of the best summary. Then, write a summary in three sentences. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this summarizing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade main idea and details, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with summarizing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a good summary in 3rd grade?

⌄

A summary tells the most important parts in a few sentences and leaves out small details. For a story, that is who it is about, what they wanted, what got in the way and how it ended (RL.3.2). For a text, it is the main idea and the key details (RI.3.2).

What is a Somebody Wanted But So Then chart?

⌄

It is a five row chart with Somebody (the character), Wanted (the goal), But (the problem), So (what they did) and Then (how it ended). Children write a few words in each row, then turn the rows into sentences.

How do I help my child leave out small details?

⌄

Ask whether the story or text would still make sense without the detail. On the informational pages, children check three important details out of six, which gives practice choosing what matters.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All ten summarizing sheets have an answer key, with a sample summary for the written part.

How many 3rd Grade summarizing worksheets are there?

⌄

10 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are summarizing worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these summarizing worksheets aligned to Common Core?

⌄
