Bones and Muscles Work Together

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Bones and Muscles Work Together" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on our bodies, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and skeletal system never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade science worksheet: read how bones and muscles work together and answer five questions. Answer key included. Part of our skeletal system our bodies collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about skeletal system?" Then let them work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These skeletal system worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.

What students will practice

  • Name the three main jobs of the skeletal system
  • Identify and label major bones including the skull, ribs, spine, and femur
  • Explain how bones and muscles work together to create movement

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read how bones and muscles work together and answer five questions. Your skeleton is all the bones in your body. Muscles are body parts that pull on bones to make you move. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, answer the questions on the next page. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3. Then, write the answer to questions 4 and 5 on the lines. Look back at the passage. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this skeletal system worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade our bodies, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with skeletal system. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does the skeletal system teach second graders?

⌄

Students learn the major bones of the human body, the three key jobs of the skeleton (support, protection, movement), and how bones connect at joints. For 7-8 year olds, labeling diagrams and identifying bones they can feel on their own body makes anatomy interactive and concrete.

When do second graders learn about the skeletal system?

⌄

The skeletal system is a standard Grade 2 human body science topic, typically covered in fall or as part of an early-year life science unit. It often pairs with the muscular system to show how bones and muscles work together.

How can I use these worksheets at home?

⌄

Have your child feel and name bones they can identify on their own body, ribs, skull, spine, kneecap, as they work through the worksheets. Building a simple skeleton model with pasta shapes or craft sticks is a classic extension activity that reinforces both names and positions.

How many 2nd Grade skeletal system worksheets are there?

⌄

1 printable worksheet, free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are skeletal system worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 2nd Grade students, roughly ages 7-8. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these skeletal system worksheets aligned to NGSS?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
