Why teach family tree reading as a stand-alone skill in second grade?

A family tree is a specific kind of diagram, generations stacked with connecting lines, that a student needs to learn to read correctly before it's useful for anything else, the same way a student needs to learn to read a map legend before a map becomes useful. Second grade is typically the first point where students are asked to interpret this kind of relationship diagram rather than just be told who's related to whom.

How is reading a family tree different from the Family Interview worksheet?

Family Interview has a student generate new family information by asking questions; Family Relationships gives a family tree that's already complete and asks the student to extract information from it. One practices collecting history, the other practices reading a structured record of history that someone else already assembled.
