Why do some map grid worksheets use letters and numbers instead of two numbers?

Reading Maps and Treasure Map Grid use a letter-then-number grid square, like B3, the same system used on real fold-out road maps and atlas indexes, while the state-coordinate sheets (California, Florida, New York) use two numbers, closer to true latitude and longitude. Covering both formats matters because a second grader will meet both versions in real life: a letter-number grid on a paper map, and a number-number coordinate system in any more advanced geography or science context later on.

Why does Map Grid Hawaii use an island chain instead of a single landmass?

Hawaii's islands are spread out with open water between them, which makes each grid square's content, land, water, or nothing, genuinely different in a way a single connected state map doesn't test as clearly. Reading a grid over islands forces a student to check each square carefully rather than assume neighboring squares all contain the same kind of feature, a slightly harder version of the same coordinate skill practiced on the mainland state sheets.
