Why do some second grade map worksheets use real maps of actual places?

Several sheets in this set, the Great Lakes, U.S. mountain ranges, U.S. rivers, and the map of India, are built from real geographic data rather than drawn as generic illustrations, so a student reading the map is reading the same kind of information an atlas would show, just at second grade reading level. Grounding map practice in real places (the five Great Lakes hold roughly a fifth of the world's fresh surface water, for example) gives the skill an actual payoff beyond the worksheet: a child who can read a real map of the Great Lakes has practiced a skill that transfers directly to any other map they encounter.

How is 'reading a map' different from 'using a map' in these worksheets?

Reading a map means identifying what is already on it: a state, a river, a park. Using a map, the harder second grade skill, means combining several parts of a map, the legend, the compass rose, and the drawn features together to answer a question the map doesn't answer directly, like planning a route or explaining how land is used. Worksheets like Find a Route and Practice Giving Directions specifically target this second, harder skill, since they ask a child to produce new information (a set of directions) rather than just locate something already labeled.
