Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Cause and Effect in a Text About How Volcanoes Build Islands" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core RI.5.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and cause and effect never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this cause and effect worksheet?

⌄

Ask your child what happened, then why, then what happened next because of it. Have them say each link out loud with the word because. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Fill a cause and effect chain from an original text about how hot spot volcanoes built Hawaii. A cause is why something happens, and an effect is what happens. In science, one event often sets off a chain of others. The directions on the page read: Read the text. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Use the text. Fill in the chain. Then, circle the best answers. Then, write on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this cause and effect worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade cause and effect, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How is 5th grade cause and effect different from earlier grades?

⌄

In 5th grade, one cause often sets off a chain of effects, and one event can have several causes. RI.5.3 asks children to explain these relationships between events and ideas in a text.

What is the difference between the web and the chain?

⌄

A web puts one big idea in the center, like the home refrigerator, and shows the causes and results around it. A chain shows events in order, where each effect becomes the cause of the next one.

What topics do the texts cover?

⌄

The refrigerator, the shrinking Aral Sea, sea otters and kelp forests, the Erie Canal, the volcanoes of Hawaii and ocean tides.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All six cause and effect sheets have an answer key, with sample answers for the webs and chains.

How many 5th Grade cause and effect worksheets are there?

⌄

6 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are cause and effect worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 5th Grade students, roughly ages 10-11. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these cause and effect worksheets aligned to Common Core?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
