Aw and Au Picture Words, Trace and Write

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Aw and Au Picture Words, Trace and Write" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on phonics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and diphthongs never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this diphthongs worksheet?

⌄

Say each picture name and stretch the vowel sound so your child hears it slide. Keep the two spellings of a sound side by side, like oi and oy, and talk about where each one sits in a word. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Circle the aw or au in words like paw, hawk and sausage, then trace and copy each word. A vowel team is two letters that make one vowel sound, like the sound in August. The letters aw and au make this sound. The directions on the page read: Read each word. Then, circle the aw or au. Then, trace the word. Then, copy it on the next tri-line. An answer key is included.

Can I use this diphthongs worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade phonics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with diphthongs. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a diphthong?

⌄

A diphthong is a vowel sound that slides from one sound to another as you say it, like ou in out or oy in boy. The set also covers aw and au, as in saw, and the two sounds of oo, as in moon and book.

How does my child know whether to write ou or ow?

⌄

Both can spell the sound in cow and house, so children need to learn the words. Ow often comes at the end of a word, like cow, or before n or l, like clown and towel. The ou or ow page practices this choice with eight picture words.

Why does oo have two sounds?

⌄

Oo can say the long sound in moon and the short sound in book. The oo sort has children say ten picture names, like broom, foot and cookie, and write each under moon or book.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All eight diphthong sheets have an answer key, including both pages of the review.

What phonics skills are taught in first grade?

⌄

First graders learn long vowel patterns (CVCe like 'make'), common vowel teams (ai, ea, oa), consonant digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh), and r-controlled vowels (ar, or, er). Per CCSS RF.1.3, they should decode regularly spelled one-syllable words and read words with inflectional endings.

How many sight words should a first grader know?

⌄

Most first grade programs expect students to read 100-200 high-frequency sight words by year end. These include common words that do not follow standard phonics rules (the, was, said, could). Daily practice with sight word worksheets and reading builds automatic recognition.
