Text Features in an Article About Recycling Paper
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Text Features in an Article About Recycling Paper" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RI.3.5. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and text features never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this text features worksheet?
⌄
Look at the title, headings and graphic with your child before reading the paragraphs. When a question asks where to look, have them point to the feature first. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Use a flow chart, headings and a glossary in an original article about recycling paper. A text feature helps you find facts. Headings name parts, a caption tells about a picture, and a glossary defines bold words. The directions on the page read: Read the article and look at each text feature. Then, turn the page. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 and 2. Then, write your answers to questions 3 to 5 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this text features worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade text features, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are text features?
⌄
Text features are the parts of a nonfiction text besides the main paragraphs, like the title, headings, bold words, captions, diagrams and a glossary. They help a reader find and understand information quickly. Using them is part of RI.3.5.
Which text features are on these sheets?
⌄
Every article has headings and a glossary. Each one adds a main graphic, such as a labeled diagram of a sloth or a bicycle, a cutaway of a hot air balloon, a table about the Great Lakes, a ladybug life cycle, a glacier cross section, a Wilma Rudolph timeline, a tide zone diagram, a prairie dog burrow or a paper recycling flow chart.
How do I help my child use the glossary and headings?
⌄
Before reading, look at the headings together and guess what each part will be about. When a bold word comes up, find it in the glossary. The questions on page two ask which feature tells what a word means, so the habit pays off right away.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All ten text features sheets have an answer key.
