Journal Entry About a Change I Noticed Outside
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Journal Entry About a Change I Noticed Outside" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing prompts, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and reflective writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade writing worksheet: read a made-up journal entry about new shoes, then tell what a change outside was like before and now with sentence starters. Part of our reflective writing collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Talk about the experience first and ask what your child would do the same or differently. For the two-page sheets, fill in page one in short notes, then write full sentences on page two. For a journal entry, draw first, then finish each sentence starter.
What students will practice
- Students will recall a real experience and plan it in order.
- Students will explain what they learned or how they felt.
- Students will write a dated journal entry with a drawing and sentence starters.

FAQ
How do I use this reflective writing worksheet?
⌄
Talk about the experience first and ask what your child would do the same or differently. For the two-page sheets, fill in page one in short notes, then write full sentences on page two. For a journal entry, draw first, then finish each sentence starter.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a made-up journal entry about new shoes, then tell what a change outside was like before and now with sentence starters. A journal entry tells about your own day and how you feel. The directions on the page read: Read the Model journal entry and the topic. Then, write the date and 3 words you might use. Then, draw the change. Then, finish each sentence starter.
Can I use this reflective writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing prompts, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with reflective writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
Why is reflective writing good for 2nd graders?
⌄
It asks children to think about what happened and what it means to them. Writing about a mistake or a hard thing they kept trying helps them see that effort pays off.
What goes in a journal entry?
⌄
A journal entry tells about your own day and how you feel. The six journal sheets have a date line, a box for three words you might use, a drawing box and sentence starters such as Today, I smiled when.
What is a 3 2 1 chart?
⌄
It asks for three things, then two, then one. On Looking Back on Second Grade, children list three memories, two things they learned and one goal for next year, which gives the reflection a clear order.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
No. Every child writes about their own life. Check that the writing tells what happened in order and ends with what your child learned or felt.
