Plan a Story About a Treehouse Club

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Plan a Story About a Treehouse Club" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing prompts, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and story writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this story writing worksheet?

⌄

Read the topic and let your child talk through the story before filling in the planner. Then have them write the story from the plan, using each box in order, and read it aloud to check that it makes sense.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a made-up plan about a bear's bakery, then web 3 character traits and plan a story about a treehouse club. A trait is a word that tells what a character is like, such as brave. The directions on the page read: Read the Model and the topic. Then, write your character's name and 3 traits in the web. Then, write 2 lines for each part. Then, use your plan to write your story on lined paper.

Can I use this story writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing prompts, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with story writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What should a 2nd grade story include?

⌄

W.2.3 asks for a short sequence of events with details about actions, thoughts and feelings, time words and an ending. The planners cover a character, a setting, a problem and how it gets fixed.

What is Somebody Wanted But So Then?

⌄

It is a five box story plan. Somebody is the character, Wanted is what they want, But is the problem, So is what the character does and Then is the ending. Plan a Story About a Shy Giant shows a model about a crab who needs a bigger shell.

How do I teach my child to write dialogue?

⌄

Have your child say what each character would say out loud, then write those words inside quotation marks. If Animals Could Talk has speech bubbles, and Plan a Story About a Moose Who Wants to Ice Skate has a line for one thing a character says.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

No. Each child invents their own story. Check that it follows the plan and has a character, a problem and an ending.
