Underline the Prepositional Phrase in Each Sentence

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Underline the Prepositional Phrase in Each Sentence" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on parts of speech, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and prepositions never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this prepositions worksheet?

⌄

Act out place prepositions with a toy and a box: put it under, inside, beside and behind. For time words, talk through your day with before, after and during. Check with the answer key, and accept any sentence on the last two lines that uses a preposition correctly.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Underline the whole prepositional phrase in sentences like The ball rolled down the hill. A prepositional phrase is a preposition and the noun after it. The directions on the page read: Find the one prepositional phrase in each sentence. Then, underline all of its words. Then, in 11, write a sentence with a phrase that starts with over. In 12, write a sentence with a phrase that starts with after. An answer key is included.

Can I use this prepositions worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade parts of speech, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with prepositions. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a preposition?

⌄

A preposition is a small word that links a noun to the rest of the sentence. Many tell where something is, like under the bed or beside the couch, and some tell when, like after school or during the night.

What is a prepositional phrase?

⌄

A prepositional phrase starts with a preposition and ends with its noun, like on the shelf or after the game. Words like very loudly or a red bird are not prepositional phrases, and one sheet asks children to tell the difference with Yes or No.

Can a prepositional phrase start a sentence?

⌄

Yes. Phrases like After lunch and During the storm can open a sentence, followed by a comma. The underlining sheet mixes phrases at the start and at the end so children learn to look for the preposition, not a spot in the sentence.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All five prepositions sheets have an answer key. The last two lines on each sheet are the child's own sentences, so the key shows a sample and says answers will vary.

How many 3rd Grade prepositions worksheets are there?

⌄

5 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are prepositions worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
