Short O Pictures, Circle and Write

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Short O Pictures, Circle and Write" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.2.C. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on vowels, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and short vowels never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this short vowels worksheet?

⌄

Say each picture name together and stretch the vowel, like baaag for bag, before your child marks it. Do one vowel at a time first, then use the mixed pages. Check with the answer key and say any missed word again slowly.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Circle the pictures with the short o sound, then trace the word fox and copy it on a tri-line. A vowel is one of the letters a, e, i, o and u. A short vowel makes a quick sound, like the o in octopus. The directions on the page read: Say the name of each picture. Then, circle each picture with the short o sound. Then, trace the word fox and copy it on the next tri-line. An answer key is included.

Can I use this short vowels worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade vowels, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with short vowels. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are the short vowel sounds?

⌄

They are the sounds in apple, elf, igloo, octopus and up. Short vowels show up in most of the first words children read, like cat, bed, pig, dog and sun.

In what order should my child do these sheets?

⌄

Start with the five one vowel picture pages, one each for a, e, i, o and u. Move on to the sorts and the color by sound quilt, then the blend words like flag and truck, and finish with the sentence pages.

What if my child mixes up short e and short i?

⌄

These two sound close. Say pairs like pen and pin or bed and bid slowly and have your child watch your mouth, since the jaw drops a little more for e. The short a, e or i sort page gives focused practice with words like desk, gift and vest.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All nineteen short vowels sheets have an answer key.

How many 1st Grade short vowels worksheets are there?

⌄

19 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are short vowels worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 1st Grade students, roughly ages 6-7. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these short vowels worksheets aligned to Common Core?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
