Long or Short U Word Sort

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Long or Short U Word Sort" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RF.2.3.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on vowels, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and long and short vowels never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this long and short vowels worksheet?

⌄

Have your child read the whole bank aloud before sorting. Ask them to say the vowel sound on its own if they are unsure. Check with the answer key and talk about any word in the wrong column.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Sort 12 words like plum, flute and rude under Long U or Short U and circle the long u letters. A long vowel says its own name, like the u in cute. A short vowel makes a quick sound, like the u in cup. The directions on the page read: Read each word in the word bank. Then, write each word under Long U or Short U. Then, circle the letters that make the long u sound in each long word. An answer key is included.

Can I use this long and short vowels worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade vowels, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with long and short vowels. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What do 2nd graders learn about long and short vowels?

⌄

They tell long and short vowels apart when reading one syllable words (RF.2.3.A), including words with blends and vowel teams like splash, waist and green.

Why circle the long vowel letters?

⌄

It shows children which letters make the long sound, like ai in trail or igh in bright. Seeing the pattern helps with the spelling pattern sheets that come next.

How should my child sort the words?

⌄

Read each word aloud, listen to the vowel, and decide if it says its name. Cross the word off the bank after writing it, so none are missed.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All five long and short vowel sorts have an answer key.

What vowel skills do 2nd graders work on?

⌄

2nd graders tell long and short vowels apart in one syllable words, learn the common vowel team spellings, and read two syllable words with long vowels (RF.2.3.A to RF.2.3.C). They also meet spellings that make the same sound in different ways, like er, ir and ur.

What is the difference between a vowel team and a diphthong?

⌄

A vowel team is two letters that work together for one vowel sound, like ai in snail or ee in sheep. A diphthong is a vowel sound that slides as you say it, like ou in shout or oy in boy. The diphthong pages also include au and aw and the two sounds of oo, as in moon and book.

Which long vowel spelling should my child use?

⌄

Some patterns have a favorite spot in a word. Ay and oy usually come at the end, as in play and toy, while ai and oi come in the middle, as in rain and coin. The sort pages help children notice these patterns, and the sentence pages give practice choosing the right spelling.
