Central Message of a Fable About a Crow Who Copied Others
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Central Message of a Fable About a Crow Who Copied Others" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RL.3.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fables, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and central message never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this central message worksheet?
⌄
After reading, ask your child what the main character learned. Have them point to the part of the story that shows it before writing. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Find the central message of an original fable about a copycat crow and support it with details. A fable is a short story, often about animals, that teaches a lesson. The lesson is its central message. The directions on the page read: Read the story. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Circle the letter of each best answer. Then, write two details on the lines. Then, write about your own life. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this central message worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade fables, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with central message. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a central message?
⌄
It is the big lesson a story teaches, like being too proud can make you look foolish. In a fable, the central message is often called the moral.
How do children support the central message?
⌄
They find two details from the story that show the lesson, such as something the character did and what happened because of it. Explaining how details show the message is part of RL.3.2.
Are these well known fables?
⌄
No. Each fable and the folktale is an original ClassWeekly story, so children meet new characters and have to work out the lesson for themselves.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All four central message sheets have an answer key.
How many 3rd Grade central message worksheets are there?
⌄
4 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are central message worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these central message worksheets aligned to Common Core?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
