Why Dropped Things Fall Down Everywhere, Read and Answer
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Why Dropped Things Fall Down Everywhere, Read and Answer" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers NGSS 5-PS2-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on Earth and space, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and gravity never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

How do I use this worksheet?
Draw a circle for Earth and add stick people all around it with arrows pointing to the center. Then weigh a backpack on a bathroom scale and divide by six to find its moon weight.
What students will practice

FAQ
How do I use this gravity worksheet?
⌄
Draw a circle for Earth and add stick people all around it with arrows pointing to the center. Then weigh a backpack on a bathroom scale and divide by six to find its moon weight.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read why a dropped basketball falls in Kansas and in Australia, as gravity pulls toward Earth's center. An astronaut is a person trained to travel in space. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3, and write the answers to questions 4 to 6 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this gravity worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade Earth and space, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with gravity. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
Why don't people in Australia fall off Earth?
⌄
Earth's gravity pulls everything toward its center, so down always means toward the middle of Earth. A person in Australia is pulled toward the center just like a person in Kansas, and both feel their feet pressed to the ground.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
⌄
Mass is the amount of matter in an object and stays the same everywhere. Weight is how hard a world's gravity pulls on it. On the moon, gravity is about one sixth as strong, so a 30-pound backpack would weigh about 5 pounds.
Why do astronauts float in space?
⌄
Earth's gravity still pulls on them, a little weaker high up. They float because their space station is falling around Earth so fast that it keeps missing the ground.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All three gravity sheets have an answer key, with sample answers for the questions children answer in their own words.
How many 5th Grade gravity worksheets are there?
⌄
3 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are gravity worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 5th Grade students, roughly ages 10-11. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these gravity worksheets aligned to NGSS?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
