How a Volcano Changes Air, Land and Water, Read and Answer
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"How a Volcano Changes Air, Land and Water, Read and Answer" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers NGSS 5-ESS2-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on Earth systems, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and Earth's spheres never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2 pages in this set
5th grade science worksheet: read how a volcano eruption changes the atmosphere, geosphere and hydrosphere, from ash to new islands. Answer key included. Part of our Earth's spheres collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
After each page, ask your child to name every sphere the passage mentions and how it changed. A beach, a hillside or a puddle after rain makes a good real example. Check with the answer key.
What students will practice
- Students will name the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere.
- Students will explain how volcanoes, plants, waves and glaciers change two or more spheres.
- Students will order the steps as one rainstorm moves water through all four spheres.

FAQ
How do I use this Earth's spheres worksheet?
⌄
After each page, ask your child to name every sphere the passage mentions and how it changed. A beach, a hillside or a puddle after rain makes a good real example. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read how a volcano eruption changes the atmosphere, geosphere and hydrosphere, from ash to new islands. A volcano is an opening in Earth where hot, liquid rock comes out. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3, and write the answers to questions 4 to 6 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this Earth's spheres worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade Earth systems, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with Earth's spheres. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are Earth's four spheres?
⌄
The geosphere is Earth's rock and soil, the hydrosphere is all its water, the atmosphere is the air around it, and the biosphere is every living thing. Each sphere touches and changes the others.
How does a volcano change Earth's spheres?
⌄
Ash shoots into the atmosphere and can block some sunlight for days. Lava cools into new rock, building land in the geosphere. Ash and mud cloud rivers and lakes in the hydrosphere, and lava can dam a stream into a new lake.
How does a glacier shape the land?
⌄
A glacier is a slow river of ice. Rocks frozen into its bottom scrape and grind the ground, and it plucks up boulders. Because it fills the whole valley, it carves a narrow V-shaped river valley into a wide U with a flat floor.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All six Earth's spheres sheets have an answer key, with sample answers for the questions children answer in their own words.
How many 5th Grade Earth's spheres worksheets are there?
⌄
6 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are Earth's spheres worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 5th Grade students, roughly ages 10-11. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these Earth's spheres worksheets aligned to NGSS?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
