Fruits or Vegetables?
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Fruits or Vegetables?" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers NGSS 1-LS1-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on our bodies, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and food and nutrition never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Circle the fruits and box the vegetables among nine foods, and mark the dairy one. First grade science sorting worksheet on food types. Part of our food and nutrition our bodies collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with something students can look at or think about: a photo, a short video, a jar on the windowsill, or a question like "what do you already know about food and nutrition?" Then let them work through the first item together as a class, then finish the rest independently or with a partner, keeping a word bank or anchor chart in view so the vocabulary stays available. When you review, ask students how they knew, and let them point to the part of the diagram or reading that told them. These food and nutrition worksheets work well as a lead in before an investigation, as a way to capture what students noticed afterward, or as review before an assessment.
What students will practice
- Sort foods as nutritious or less nutritious choices
- Identify nutrients in common foods and describe their role in the body
- Explain why the body needs a variety of foods to stay healthy

How do I use this food and nutrition worksheet?

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
These food and nutrition worksheets for 1st grade give students a clear, visual way to work through one of the big ideas in our bodies. Students label diagrams, sort and classify examples, read short explanations, and answer questions that ask them to say why, not just what. Each page keeps the science vocabulary front and center so students leave with the words they need to talk about food and nutrition accurately. Working through food and nutrition on paper gives 1st grade students something concrete to hold onto before, during, or after the hands on part of a lesson.
Can I use this food and nutrition worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade our bodies, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with food and nutrition. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do children tell a fruit from a vegetable?
⌄
At this level the working rule is that fruit is the sweet part that holds the seeds. The page keeps to clear cases, apple, banana, orange and pear against carrot, broccoli and lettuce, so the rule is not tested by awkward examples.
Why is there a dairy item?
⌄
A wedge of cheese is included so the sorting is not a straight two-way split. The child marks it separately, which stops them putting every picture into one of two piles by default.
What about tomatoes and cucumbers?
⌄
Both are botanically fruit and both are usually called vegetables, which is why neither is on this page. It is a good discussion but a poor test question for first grade.
What does food and nutrition teach first graders?
⌄
First graders learn to identify different food groups, including fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy, and understand why eating a variety of foods keeps the body healthy. They explore what different nutrients do, such as calcium for bones and vitamins for energy, in simple, age-appropriate terms.
When do first graders learn about food and nutrition?
⌄
Food and nutrition is typically introduced in Grade 1 as part of a human body or health science unit. It often connects to other school programs like the school lunch menu, garden projects, or cooking activities that make the learning hands-on.
How can I use these worksheets at home?
⌄
Look at food labels or a meal on the table together and ask your child which food group each item belongs to. The worksheet's food group sorting activities are easy to do at the kitchen table before or after a meal. You can also let your child help plan a balanced snack and explain why they chose each food.
How many 1st Grade food and nutrition worksheets are there?
⌄
8 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are food and nutrition worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 1st Grade students, roughly ages 6-7. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these food and nutrition worksheets aligned to NGSS?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
Can I use these food and nutrition worksheets for homeschool?
⌄
Yes. Nothing here assumes a classroom of 25, so they work the same one-to-one at the kitchen table as they do in a 1st Grade classroom, a literacy centre, or a tutoring session.
