What Kind of Analogy? Name the Relationship
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"What Kind of Analogy? Name the Relationship" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core L.3.5. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and analogies never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade vocabulary worksheet: read four kinds of analogies and write the kind for each one, such as opposites or tool and job. Answer key included. Part of our analogies collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Before choosing a word, have your child say the link between the first pair as a full sentence. If an answer is wrong, test it by saying the second pair the same way. Check with the answer key.
What students will practice
- Students will finish analogies by finding the link in the first pair.
- Students will solve opposite and same meaning analogies.
- Students will name the kind of relationship an analogy uses.

FAQ
How do I use this analogies worksheet?
⌄
Before choosing a word, have your child say the link between the first pair as a full sentence. If an answer is wrong, test it by saying the second pair the same way. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read four kinds of analogies and write the kind for each one, such as opposites or tool and job. An analogy compares two pairs of words. The way each pair is linked is its relationship. The directions on the page read: Read the four kinds of analogies in the box. Then, read each analogy. Then, write its kind on the line. An answer key is included.
Can I use this analogies worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade analogies, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is an analogy for a 3rd grader?
⌄
An analogy says two pairs of words are linked in the same way. Bee is to hive as bird is to nest works because each animal lives in that home. The job is to find the link in the first pair, then pick the word that makes the second pair match.
How do I teach my child to solve analogies?
⌄
Have your child turn the first pair into a sentence, like a saw is used to cut. Then try the same sentence with each choice for the second pair. The choice that makes a true sentence is the answer. These pages take one kind of link per page before the mixed check in.
Are analogies part of the 3rd grade standards?
⌄
CCSS L.3.5 asks 3rd graders to show they understand word relationships and nuances in word meanings. Analogies practice exactly that, and the opposite and same meaning pages also review antonyms and synonyms. Analogies show up again in 4th and 5th grade.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 10 analogies sheets have an answer key.
