Why practice beginning sounds first?

They are the easiest sounds to hear. Ending sounds come next, and middle vowels are last. Starting where success is likely builds the confidence needed for the harder parts of the word.
My child says the letter name instead of the sound. Is that a problem?

It is a common mix up and worth separating. Play sound games with no letters at all for a while: what does sun start with? Say the sound. Once they can hear it, attaching the letter is quick.
