What is cause and effect at this age?

Understanding that one thing makes another happen: it rained, so the ground got wet. Kindergarten works with obvious physical examples, which is where the cards sit. Abstract causes come much later.
How do I use these cards?

Lay out a cause and ask what happens next, or lay out an effect and ask why. Working backwards from the effect is the harder direction and the more valuable one, since that is what comprehension questions ask for.
Why does cause and effect matter for reading?

Because it is what "why did that happen?" is asking. Children who track cause and effect follow stories; children who do not can retell events but cannot explain them. It is one of the biggest divides in early comprehension.
What is a summer bridge calendar?

A summer bridge calendar is a plan of short daily activities that keeps skills fresh between one grade and the next. The Kindergarten to 1st grade calendar has 50 activities over 10 weeks, Monday to Friday, each about 15 minutes.
