What does this sorting activity involve?

Sorting clothing pictures into winter and summer. It combines two ideas: noticing what makes items alike, and knowing enough about the seasons to know which pile is which.
Why is sorting by season harder than sorting by color?
⌄
Because the rule is not visible in the object. A child can see that two things are red, but knowing a coat belongs to winter requires background knowledge. That is what makes it a good step up from color and shape.
What if my child argues about an item?

Let them, and ask why. A raincoat is genuinely arguable, and a child who explains their reasoning is doing better than one who guessed the expected answer. Being able to justify the sort is the skill.

A summer bridge calendar is a plan of short daily activities that keeps skills fresh between one grade and the next. The Kindergarten to 1st grade calendar has 50 activities over 10 weeks, Monday to Friday, each about 15 minutes.

Yes. The summer bridge completion certificate works for kindergarten to 5th grade and has lines for the child's name, the grade they are ready to start, a signature and the date.
