FAQ

How do I use this biographical writing worksheet?

⌄

Read the fact card together and have your child put each year in order before writing. Ask what the person did that people still remember, and use the answer for the important box.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a fact card about Benjamin Banneker, then fill a 4 row timeline and plan an introduction and a conclusion. A biography tells about a real person. A timeline shows events in order. The directions on the page read: Read the model. Read the topic. Then, read the Fact card. Then, write a year and what happened in each of the 4 timeline rows. Then, turn the page. On page 2: Read the topic. Then, use your timeline on page 1 to write an introduction, what made him important and a conclusion. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.

Can I use this biographical writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade informative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with biographical writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What goes in a 5th grade biography?

⌄

An introduction that names the person, important events in order, what made the person important and a conclusion. The Banneker planner moves from a timeline on page 1 to those three parts on page 2.

Why start with a timeline?

⌄

A timeline puts events in order by year, so the essay can follow it. The model row shows Clara Barton founding the American Red Cross in 1881.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

The short biography plan has one. The Banneker planner is open, so check that each timeline row comes from the fact card and the essay says why he matters.
