FAQ
How do I use this comparing and contrasting worksheet?
⌄
Have your child fill in the same row for both subjects before moving to the next row. Then draft the essay on lined paper with one transition word for each difference.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read a fact card about Mars and Venus, then fill a compare chart and an Alike row and plan an introduction and a conclusion. To compare, tell how things are alike. To contrast, tell differences. The directions on the page read: Read the model. Read the topic. Then, read the Fact card. Then, using the card, fill in the chart and the Alike row. Then, write an introduction and a conclusion. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.
Can I use this comparing and contrasting worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade informative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with comparing and contrasting. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is the difference between block and point by point structure?
⌄
Block structure tells everything about one subject, then everything about the other. Point by point moves through one feature at a time, like weather and then land. The two places planner sets up a point by point report.
Which transition words fit compare and contrast writing?
⌄
Both, similarly and likewise show how two things are alike. However, in contrast, unlike and on the other hand show how they differ.
How does a fact card help?
⌄
The Mars and Venus card lists facts such as Venus being the hottest planet and Mars looking red from iron in its dust, so your child can sort them into the chart and the Alike row without searching first.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
The alike and different page has one. The two places and Mars and Venus planners are open, so check that every row has a fact for both subjects.
