FAQ

How do I use this informative essays worksheet?

⌄

Read the fact card together and group the facts by subtopic with colored pencils. Then fill in the planner and draft one body paragraph at a time.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a fact card about octopuses, then plan an essay with a hook, a main idea, 3 subtopics with details and a conclusion. The main idea is what an essay is mostly about. A subtopic is one part. The directions on the page read: Read the model. Read the topic. Then, read the Fact card. Then, write a hook and main idea, a subtopic and 2 details in the 3 body boxes, and a conclusion. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.

Can I use this informative essays worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade informative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with informative essays. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How is an informative essay organized?

⌄

An introduction with a hook and the main idea, body paragraphs that each cover one subtopic with details, and a conclusion that sums up. The octopus planner has a box for each part.

Can an informative essay use cause and effect or problem and solution?

⌄

Yes. The erosion planner has 3 cause and effect rows, and the food waste planner has the problem, its cause and 3 solutions, each with evidence.

Why plan from a fact card?

⌄

The card gives every fact your child needs, so the work is organizing and writing in their own words. Most of the planners ask children to use only the facts on the card.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

The first plan has one. The fact card planners are open, so check that each detail comes from the card and the conclusion sums up without adding a new fact.
