My Book Review Reading Response
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"My Book Review Reading Response" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RL.2.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and reading response never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this reading response worksheet?
⌄
Keep the book nearby so your child can look back for details. Fill in page one together the first time, then let your child write the response on page two and read it aloud.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Color stars to rate a book and plan a book review with an opinion, two reasons and who should read it, then write it. An opinion is what you think. A reason tells why. The directions on the page read: Read the topic. Then, write the book, color the stars, and write your opinion. Then, write two reasons and who should read it. Then, use this plan to write your draft on page 2. On page 2: Read your plan on page 1. Then, write a title. Then, write at least 5 sentences: your opinion, two reasons, and who should read the book.
Can I use this reading response worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with reading response. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a story map?
⌄
A story map is a plan with boxes for the characters, the setting and the beginning, middle and end. Filling it in first makes the retelling on page two easier to write in order (RL.2.5).
How do I help my child find the lesson of a story?
⌄
Ask what the main character learned by the end. Then ask how that could help someone in real life. That answer, in your child's own words, is the lesson (RL.2.2).
Does my child need a particular book?
⌄
No. Any story your child has read works for most sheets. Facts I Learned From a Nonfiction Book needs a book about real things, like animals or space.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
No. Answers depend on the book your child chose. Check that each detail really happens in the book and that each opinion comes with a reason.
What writing skills should 2nd graders have?
⌄
Second graders write opinion pieces with reasons (CCSS W.2.1), informative paragraphs with facts and a conclusion (W.2.2), and narratives with details, feelings and time words (W.2.3). They also begin to revise and edit with guidance (W.2.5).
What is the difference between an opinion, a narrative and an informative piece?
⌄
An opinion tells what the writer thinks and why. A narrative tells a story in order. An informative piece teaches true facts about a topic. Each page in this topic names its type in the title, so you can choose the one you need.
How long should a 2nd grade paragraph be?
⌄
Four to seven sentences is typical: a topic or opinion sentence, two or three supporting sentences and a closing sentence. The planning boxes on these pages help children organize before they write.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Not every sheet. The 36 opinion, narrative, informative and writing process sheets have an answer key with a marking guide and a model answer. The 10 two-page how-to and reading response sheets have no key, since each child writes their own steps or about their own book.
