Fill In a Source Card From a Book Cover
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Fill In a Source Card From a Book Cover" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.8. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on informative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and research practice never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this research practice worksheet?
⌄
After the source card page, pull a real book off the shelf so your child sees where the title, author and year appear. For the sorting page, read each research question aloud before your child places the notes.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Copy the title, author and year from 2 nonfiction book covers onto source cards and name a fact to find. A source gives facts. A source card names the source. The directions on the page read: Read the Example. Then, in Part A, copy the title, author and year from each of the 2 book covers onto its source card. Then, in Part B, write one fact you could look for in each book. An answer key is included.
Can I use this research practice worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade informative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with research practice. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a source card?
⌄
A source card names where facts came from: the title, the author and the year. On the book covers page, children copy each part exactly, with its capital letters, from two nonfiction covers made for the page.
How do I teach my child to sort notes?
⌄
Read the research question first, then ask which question each note answers. On the sea otter page, cracks clams answers what sea otters eat and has thick fur answers how they stay warm. Each column holds three notes.
Why practice research skills before writing a report?
⌄
A report is only as good as its notes. When children can match a note to a question and record where it came from, planning and drafting go faster, and every fact in the report can be checked (W.3.8).
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 3 research practice sheets have an answer key. On the source card and sea otter pages, the open parts show a sample answer and what to look for.
How many 3rd Grade research practice worksheets are there?
⌄
3 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are research practice worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these research practice worksheets aligned to Common Core?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
