Choose the Best Source for Each Research Question
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Choose the Best Source for Each Research Question" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.8. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on informative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and research writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade writing worksheet: pick a dictionary, a map or a whale book as the best source for 6 questions, then write a map question. Answer key included. Part of our research writing collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

FAQ
How do I use this research writing worksheet?
⌄
Help your child choose a topic they are curious about and find one or two kid-friendly books or websites. Have them write notes in a few words, not full sentences, and check the notes pages with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Pick a dictionary, a map or a whale book as the best source for 6 questions, then write a map question. A source is where you find information. Research answers a question. The directions on the page read: Read the Example and the 3 sources. Then, in Part A, write the best source for each of the 6 questions. Then, in Part B, write 1 question the map could answer. An answer key is included.
Can I use this research writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade informative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with research writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a note?
⌄
A note is a few words that keep one fact from a source, like hump stores fat, not water. The camel page turns 6 full sentences into notes of 3 to 6 words, then puts 2 notes back together in one sentence (W.3.8).
How does my child pick the right source?
⌄
Match the question to the source. A word's meaning is in a dictionary, a place is on a map and facts about an animal are in a book about it. The source page practices this with 6 questions about Denver, the word timid and how whales breathe.
How do I help my child pick a research question?
⌄
Start with something your child already wonders about, like a planet or a kind of weather. The big question page splits one question into three smaller ones, and the mini research book has three question boxes with notes and a source for each.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
The hummingbird notes, camel notes and best source pages have an answer key, and so does the page that ends in a short paragraph. The 7 planners have no key, since each child researches their own topic.
