Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Plan a Fact Page About Sea Otters From a Fact Card" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.2.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on informative writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. FAQ

How do I use this writing informative paragraphs worksheet?

⌄

Read the model and the fact card together and underline the facts your child wants to use. Fill each box with short notes, then write the draft on lined paper.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a fact card about sea otters, then draw a diagram with 3 captions and plan 2 Did you know facts and a closing. A diagram is a drawing that shows facts. A caption explains it. The directions on the page read: Read the model. Read the topic. Then, read the Fact card. Then, using only the card, draw a sea otter diagram with 3 captions. Then, write 2 Did you know facts and a closing sentence. Then, use your plan to write your draft on lined paper.

Can I use this writing informative paragraphs worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade informative writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with writing informative paragraphs. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a fact card?

⌄

A fact card is a short list of true facts printed on the page. Children plan their paragraph using only those facts, so they practice organizing and writing in their own words without having to research first.

How do linking words help an informative paragraph?

⌄

Words like first, next, then and finally show the order of steps. The frog and paper recycling planners ask for 4 steps that each start with a linking word (W.3.2.C).

What makes a good topic sentence?

⌄

It names the topic and the main idea, like penguins stay warm in three ways. Each fact card planner shows a model topic sentence on another topic, then leaves a box for your child's own.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

One sheet has an answer key. The planners and open writing pages have none, since children write in their own words. Check that every detail comes from the fact card and that the closing sentence sums up the paragraph.
