This That These and Those

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"This That These and Those" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core L.3.1.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on pronouns, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and using pronouns never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

This That These and Those
This That These and Those

3rd grade grammar worksheet: use a near and far chart to choose this, that, these or those in eight sentences, then write two. Answer key included. Part of our using pronouns collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Introduce the skill with a brief whole-class activity, such as calling out examples and asking students to give a thumbs up when they hear using pronouns in a sentence. Then let students work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, referring to a class anchor chart if one is available. When reviewing answers, ask students to explain why an answer is correct rather than just confirming it. These using pronouns worksheets work well as a focused practice activity, a homework assignment, or a warm-up at the start of a language arts lesson.

What students will practice

  • Students will identify and correctly use using pronouns in sentences and short passages.
  • Students will distinguish using pronouns from related language concepts and apply rules consistently.
  • Students will demonstrate understanding of using pronouns through guided and independent practice, in both reading and their own writing.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Use a near and far chart to choose this, that, these or those in eight sentences, then write two. This, that, these and those point to nouns. They tell if a thing is near or far, and if there is one or many. The directions on the page read: Read the chart. Then, circle the correct word in each sentence. Then, write one sentence with these and one sentence with that. An answer key is included.

Can I use this using pronouns worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade pronouns, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with using pronouns. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What types of pronouns are 3rd graders expected to use correctly?

⌄

Third graders work with personal subject pronouns (I, he, she, they), object pronouns (me, him, her, them), and possessive pronouns (my, his, her, their) in context-based exercises.

How do using pronouns worksheets help with 3rd grade writing fluency?

⌄

Correctly using pronouns makes writing flow naturally - students learn to substitute nouns strategically so sentences avoid repetition while maintaining clarity about who or what is being discussed.

What common errors do 3rd graders make with pronoun use?

⌄

Common mistakes include using the wrong case (e.g., 'Me and my friend went' instead of 'My friend and I went') and unclear pronoun references, both of which worksheets target with focused exercises.

How many 3rd Grade using pronouns worksheets are there?

⌄

5 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are using pronouns worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these using pronouns worksheets aligned to Common Core?

⌄
