"Read Decimals Aloud, Fix the Word Form Mistakes" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core 5.NBT.A.3a. FAQ

How do I use this decimals in word form worksheet?

⌄

Have your child read each decimal out loud before writing it, saying and only at the decimal point. Point out that the last digit's place names the decimal part. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read decimals aloud, check each word form and fix the ones with mistakes. A decimal in standard form uses digits, like 1.2. In word form it uses words, like one and two tenths. The directions on the page read: Read the Example. Then, read each decimal aloud and check its word form. Then, write OK if it is right, or write the correct word form on the line. An answer key is included.

Can I use this decimals in word form worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with decimals in word form. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you write a decimal in word form?

⌄

Read the whole number, say and for the decimal point, then read the digits after it as one number and name the place of the last digit. So 3.45 is three and forty five hundredths, and 0.208 is two hundred eight thousandths.

What word form mistakes do students fix?

⌄

Most of them name the wrong place, like three and seven hundredths for 3.7, which should be three and seven tenths. Reading the decimal aloud and naming the place of the last digit catches these mistakes.

How are decimals written on a check?

⌄

A check writes the dollars in words, then and, then the cents over 100, like thirty two and 15/100 dollars for $32.15. Students practice this and then fill in two checks.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All six decimals in word form sheets have an answer key.

What decimal skills do 5th graders need?

⌄

5th graders read, write, compare and round decimals to thousandths (CCSS 5.NBT.A.3 and 5.NBT.A.4), understand place value patterns and powers of 10 (5.NBT.A.1 and 5.NBT.A.2), and add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths (5.NBT.B.7).

What order should I teach decimals in 5th grade?

⌄

Start with place value to thousandths and decimals in word form, then comparing, ordering and rounding. Move to adding and subtracting, then multiplying and dividing. Finish with word problems, mixed operations and a unit review. The subtopics on this page follow that order.

How do I help my child place the decimal point correctly?

⌄

Estimate first. Rounding each number to a whole number gives a ballpark answer, so 4.8 x 3.1 should be about 15, which rules out 1.488 and 148.8.
