Equivalent Fractions With Shape Models
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Equivalent Fractions With Shape Models" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core 3.NF.A.3.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fractions and decimals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and equivalent fractions never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade math worksheet: shade a second shape to match the first, then write equivalent fractions like 1/2 = 3/6 and 3/4 = 6/8. Answer key included. Part of our equivalent fractions collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with the shape model and fraction bar pages, where the shaded amounts can be compared by eye. Then move to the number line pages, and finish with the pages on whole numbers as fractions.
What students will practice
- Students will shade a second shape to match the first shape.
- Students will write equivalent fractions such as 1/2 = 3/6 and 3/4 = 6/8.
- Students will see that 2/2 and 4/4 both name the whole.

Number and Operations-Fractions · 3rd Grade
Standard: Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3. Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

FAQ
How do I use this equivalent fractions worksheet?
⌄
Start with the shape model and fraction bar pages, where the shaded amounts can be compared by eye. Then move to the number line pages, and finish with the pages on whole numbers as fractions.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Shade a second shape to match the first, then write equivalent fractions like 1/2 = 3/6 and 3/4 = 6/8. Equivalent fractions name the same amount of the same whole, like 2/4 and 4/8. The directions on the page read: Shade the second shape so it shows the same amount as the first shape. Then, count the shaded parts and write the equivalent fraction in the boxes. An answer key is included.
Can I use this equivalent fractions worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade fractions and decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with equivalent fractions. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are equivalent fractions?
⌄
Equivalent fractions name the same amount of the same whole with different numbers. 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8 all shade the same length of the same bar.
How do number lines show equivalent fractions?
⌄
Equivalent fractions sit at the same point on number lines of the same length. On Match Equal Points on Two Number Lines, 3/4 on a fourths line lines up with 6/8 on an eighths line.
How can a whole number be a fraction?
⌄
When the numerator and denominator are the same, the fraction is one whole, so 4/4 = 1. Two wholes cut in halves make 4/2 = 2, and a whole not cut at all is 1/1.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 10 sheets have an answer key.
