How do I use this worksheet?
Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These fraction word problems for grade 3 worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.

Number and Operations-Fractions · 3rd Grade
Standard: Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Solve 4 comparison word problems about sandwiches, ribbons, pizzas and gardens with strips and symbols. Compare fractions only for wholes of the same size. Use greater than (>), less than (<) or equal to (=). The directions on the page read: Read each problem and shade the strips to show both fractions. Then, write the answer on the line. Then, write >, < or = in the box. An answer key is included.
Can I use this fraction word problems for grade 3 worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade fractions and decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fraction word problems for grade 3. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you solve a fraction word problem?
⌄
Find the whole and how many equal parts it has, then the parts the story asks about. Shading a strip or drawing a picture helps before you write the answer.
Why do the stories say the same size?
⌄
Fractions can only be compared when the wholes are the same size. Fraction Comparison Word Problems gives Mia and Josh the same size sandwiches so 2/4 and 3/4 can be compared.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. Both sheets have an answer key.
