Fractions of a Set With Sixths and Eighths
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Fractions of a Set With Sixths and Eighths" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core 3.NF.A.1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fractions and decimals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fractional part of a set never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade math worksheet: write the fraction of each of 8 counter sets that is colored, such as 5/8 and 1/6. Answer key included. Part of our fractional part of a set fractions and decimals collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These fractional part of a set worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.
What students will practice
- Students will count all the counters and the colored ones in 8 sets.
- Students will write the fraction colored, such as 5/8 or 1/6.
- Students will see that a set with every counter colored shows 2/2.

FAQ
How do I use this fractional part of a set worksheet?
⌄
Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Write the fraction of each of 8 counter sets that is colored, such as 5/8 and 1/6. A set is a group of things. The denominator is how many are in the set; the numerator counts the ones named. The directions on the page read: Count all the counters and the colored ones in each set. Then, write the fraction of the set that is colored in the boxes. An answer key is included.
Can I use this fractional part of a set worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade fractions and decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fractional part of a set. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a fraction of a set?
⌄
It names part of a group of things. If Ben has 8 socks and 3 are striped, 3/8 of the socks are striped: 8 is the whole set and 3 is the part named.
How is a set different from a shape?
⌄
A shape is one whole cut into equal parts. A set is made of separate things, like counters or marbles, and each one is an equal part of the group.
How do you find the fraction left white?
⌄
Count the counters that are not colored for the numerator and all the counters for the denominator. If 2 of 6 counters are colored, 4/6 are still white.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 8 sheets have an answer key.
