Divide a Number Line Into Equal Parts
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Divide a Number Line Into Equal Parts" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core 3.NF.A.2.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on fractions and decimals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fractions on a number line never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade math worksheet: mark ticks to cut 6 number lines into halves to eighths, label them and circle fractions like 3/4. Answer key included. Part of our fractions on a number line collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Begin with the halves and fourths page, then thirds and sixths, then eighths. Have your child count the equal parts between 0 and 1 aloud before writing each fraction.
What students will practice
- Students will draw tick marks to cut 6 number lines into equal parts.
- Students will label each tick from halves to eighths.
- Students will circle fractions such as 3/4 and 5/6.

Standard: Represent a fraction 1/b on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into b equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/b and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/b on the number line.

FAQ
How do I use this fractions on a number line worksheet?
⌄
Begin with the halves and fourths page, then thirds and sixths, then eighths. Have your child count the equal parts between 0 and 1 aloud before writing each fraction.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Mark ticks to cut 6 number lines into halves to eighths, label them and circle fractions like 3/4. On a number line, the space from 0 to 1 is one whole cut into equal parts. Each tick mark names a fraction. The directions on the page read: Draw a tick mark on each gray dot. Then, write a fraction under each tick. Then, circle the fraction named. An answer key is included.
Can I use this fractions on a number line worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade fractions and decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fractions on a number line. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do I introduce a number line to a five year old?
⌄
Treat it as a path rather than a picture: your child puts a finger on a number and hops along it, saying each number as they land. Hopping physically is what makes the line make sense. Reading it as a diagram comes much later.
Why use a number line instead of counting objects?
⌄
Objects show how many. A number line shows order and distance, which objects cannot. It is the first tool that makes the gap between numbers visible, and it becomes essential for skip counting, comparison, and later for negative numbers and fractions.
My child counts the marks instead of the hops. Is that a problem?
⌄
It is the classic number line mistake and worth correcting gently. Count the jumps between numbers, not the numbers themselves. Saying "hop" out loud with each move usually fixes it within a session or two.
How do you find a fraction on a number line?
⌄
Count the equal parts between 0 and 1 for the denominator. Then count the parts from 0 to the point for the numerator. A dot 3 parts along a line cut into 4 parts is at 3/4.
What does hopping by unit fractions mean?
⌄
Each hop is one equal part, such as 1/6. Three hops of 1/4 from 0 land on 3/4. Hop Along a Number Line by Unit Fractions has children count the hops and write where they land.
Can a fraction be greater than 1?
⌄
Yes. Past 1, keep counting the same parts: on a thirds line, the point after 3/3 is 4/3. Missing Fractions on a Number Line includes lines from 0 to 2.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 13 sheets have an answer key.
