Find the Missing Part in Expanded Form
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Find the Missing Part in Expanded Form" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on place value and rounding, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and expanded form never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade math worksheet: find the missing part in 10 expanded forms, such as the thousands in 6,846 or the tens in 2,784. Answer key included. Part of our expanded form place value and rounding collection.
How do I use this worksheet?
Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These expanded form worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.
What students will practice
- Students will compare 10 numbers with their expanded form, one part missing.
- Students will find a missing thousands, hundreds, tens or ones part, as in 6,846.
- Students will use the value of each digit to write the missing part in the box.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Find the missing part in 10 expanded forms, such as the thousands in 6,846 or the tens in 2,784. In expanded form, each part is the value of one digit: 3,512 = 3,000 + 500 + 10 + 2. The directions on the page read: Look at each number and its expanded form. Then, write the missing part in the box. An answer key is included.
Can I use this expanded form worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade place value and rounding, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with expanded form. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is expanded form?
⌄
Expanded form writes a number as the sum of the value of each digit. 6,324 = 6,000 + 300 + 20 + 4, because the 6 is worth 6,000, the 3 is worth 300, the 2 is worth 20 and the 4 is worth 4.
What happens to a 0 in expanded form?
⌄
A digit that is 0 adds nothing, so it is skipped. On Expanded Form of Numbers With Zeros, 1,704 = 1,000 + 700 + 4 and 9,700 = 9,000 + 700.
Can the parts of expanded form be in any order?
⌄
Yes. Adding the parts by place value gives the same number in any order. On Expanded Form to Standard Form, Mixed Order, 2 + 90 + 300 + 9,000 = 9,392.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 5 expanded form sheets have an answer key.
