Op, Ot and Ug Word Family Sort
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Op, Ot and Ug Word Family Sort" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.3.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on phonics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and CVC words never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this CVC words worksheet?
⌄
Have your child say each picture name slowly and tap one finger for each sound before writing. Start with the picture and matching pages, then move to word families and word ladders. Check each page with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Sort 12 words like mop, cot and mug into the op, ot and ug word family houses. A word family is a group of words that end the same, like cat and hat. The directions on the page read: Read each word in the Word Bank and look at its last two letters. Then, write the word in the house of its word family. Use each word once. An answer key is included.
Can I use this CVC words worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade phonics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with CVC words. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a CVC word?
⌄
A CVC word has three letters in the order consonant, vowel, consonant, and the vowel makes its short sound, as in cat, bed, pig, dog and sun. These are the first words most children decode on their own (RF.1.3.B).
What is a word family?
⌄
A word family is a group of words that end the same way and rhyme, like cat, hat, mat and sat. The word family sorts have children look at the last two letters of 12 words and write each in the at, an or ap, ig, in or it, or op, ot or ug house.
How does a word ladder help with CVC words?
⌄
A word ladder changes one letter at a time, so children must listen for which sound changed. On CVC Word Ladder From Cat to Map, cat becomes hat, hot, hop, mop and then map.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 29 CVC words sheets have an answer key.
