Trace and Write O_e and U_e Picture Words

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Trace and Write O_e and U_e Picture Words" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.3.C. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on phonics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and silent e words never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this silent e words worksheet?

⌄

Read each short word and its silent e partner aloud together, like kit and kite, so your child hears the vowel change. Do the add e pages first, then the sentence and sort pages. Check each page with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Trace and copy bone, rope, nose, globe, cube and flute and circle the vowel and silent e. A silent e is an e at the end of a word. It is quiet, but it makes the vowel say its name. The directions on the page read: Read each picture name. Trace the word on the top line. Then, copy it on the line under it. Then, circle the vowel and the silent e in the word you traced. An answer key is included.

Can I use this silent e words worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade phonics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with silent e words. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a silent e?

⌄

A silent e is an e at the end of a word that you do not hear. It makes the vowel before it say its name, so cap becomes cape and kit becomes kite (RF.1.3.C).

Why practice pairs like kit and kite?

⌄

Only the e changes, so children can see and hear the vowel switch from short to long. The add e pages turn ten short words like hop, cub and plan into hope, cube and plane, and the picture pages ask children to circle the word in a pair that names the picture.

What do a_e, i_e, o_e and u_e mean?

⌄

They are the four silent e patterns, with the line standing for the consonant in the middle, as in cake, bike, rope and cube. The sort pages have children write 16 words under these four headings.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 32 silent e words sheets have an answer key.
