Ai and Ay Words in Sentences

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Ai and Ay Words in Sentences" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.3.C. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on phonics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and vowel teams never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this vowel teams worksheet?

⌄

Teach one long vowel at a time, starting with ai and ay, and have your child circle the two vowels before reading the word. Save the mixed word searches and riddles for review. Check each page with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Finish six sentences with ai and ay words like rain, tail, paint and stay from a word bank. A vowel team is two vowels together that make one long vowel sound, like ai in snail. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Find the word in the Word Bank that makes sense in it. Then, write the word on the line. Use each word once. An answer key is included.

Can I use this vowel teams worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade phonics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with vowel teams. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a vowel team?

⌄

A vowel team is two vowels side by side that make one long vowel sound. Ai and ay say long a, ee and ea say long e, and oa and ow say long o, as in rain, feet and boat (RF.1.3.C).

How does my child know whether to write ai or ay?

⌄

Ai usually sits in the middle of a word, like rain and snail, and ay usually comes at the end, like day and play. The long a spelling page uses this rule to choose between pairs like hai and hay.

How can my child tell ee from ea?

⌄

Both spell long e, so children learn the words by sight. Sorting helps: the ee or ea sort has 12 words like feet, green, leaf and beach, and pairs like see and sea show that the spelling changes the meaning.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 27 vowel teams sheets have an answer key.
