Long or Short O

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Long or Short O" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.2.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on vowels, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and long and short vowels never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this long and short vowels worksheet?

⌄

Have your child say each picture name out loud, then say the vowel name to check for a match. Point out the silent e in pairs like hop and hope. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Say each picture name, like rope or sock, and color the Long or Short box for the o sound. A long vowel says its own name, like the o in ocean. A short vowel makes a quick sound, like the o in otter. The directions on the page read: Say the name of each picture. An adult may read the names. Then, color the Long box if you hear long o. Then, color the Short box if you hear short o. An answer key is included.

Can I use this long and short vowels worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade vowels, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with long and short vowels. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the difference between a long and a short vowel?

⌄

A long vowel says its own name, like the a in cake or the i in kite. A short vowel makes a quick sound, like the a in cat or the i in kit. Telling the two apart by ear is part of RF.1.2.A.

Why do pairs like cap and cape help?

⌄

Only the silent e changes, so children can see how the vowel sound changes from short to long. The word check page has several of these pairs mixed in with single words.

My child says every vowel is long. What helps?

⌄

Say the word, then say the vowel name on its own, and ask if they match. In kite you hear the name of i, but in kit you do not. Work through one vowel page at a time before the mixed review.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All eight long and short vowels sheets have an answer key, including both pages of the review.

How many 1st Grade long and short vowels worksheets are there?

⌄

8 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are long and short vowels worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 1st Grade students, roughly ages 6-7. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these long and short vowels worksheets aligned to Common Core?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
