Match Each Picture to Its Syllable Number

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Match Each Picture to Its Syllable Number" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core RF.K.2.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on syllables, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and sort by syllables never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this sort by syllables worksheet?

⌄

Clap each picture name together before cutting or drawing any lines. Help with the scissors on the cut and glue page and glue only after every picture is placed. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Clap picture names and draw a line from each picture to its number of claps. The directions on the page read: Say the name of each picture and clap the parts. Then, draw a line from its dot to the dot of the number of claps. An answer key is included.

Can I use this sort by syllables worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten syllables, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with sort by syllables. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does sorting by syllables teach?

⌄

Sorting asks children to compare words, not just count one. Hearing that pumpkin and wagon both have two claps while elephant has three builds the listening skill in RF.K.2.B.

How should we do the cut and glue page?

⌄

An adult can cut on the dashed lines or help with the scissors. Lay all nine pictures out, say and clap each name together, then glue each one in its row. Sorting before gluing lets your child fix a mistake first.

Which should come first, clap and count or the sorts?

⌄

Start with the clap and count pages, which take one word at a time. Move to these sorts once your child can clap a word on their own.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All three syllable sort sheets have an answer key.

How do I explain syllables to a kindergartner?

⌄

Call them the beats or claps in a word. Say the word slowly and clap once for each part: dog has one clap, pizza has two and butterfly has three. A hand under the chin works too, since the chin drops once for each syllable.

Does my kindergartner need to read the words?

⌄

No. Every sheet works from pictures, so children say the picture name out loud and clap. Say the name with your child first if a picture is unclear, like tambourine or xylophone. Counting syllables in spoken words is the skill in RF.K.2.B.

Which syllables sheet should we start with?

⌄

Start with the pages that use only 1 or 2 claps, like the foods page and the One Clap or Two page. Then move to pages with three claps. The cut and glue sort and the check in page work well last, since they mix 1, 2 and 3 claps.

Do the kindergarten syllables worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 12 syllables sheets have an answer key that shows the number of claps for each picture.
