Ng and Nk Words in Sentences

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Ng and Nk Words in Sentences" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RF.2.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on phonics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and consonant practice never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this consonant practice worksheet?

⌄

Have your child say each word slowly and listen for every consonant in a blend, then for the one sound of a digraph. Use the rule boxes on the ch or tch pages to talk through each choice. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Finish six sentences with ng and nk words like wing, song, skunk and wink. A digraph is 2 letters that make one sound, like ng at the end of hang. The letters nk sound like ng plus k, as in tank. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Find the word in the Word Bank that makes sense in the blank. Then, write the word on the line. Use each word once. An answer key is included.

Can I use this consonant practice worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade phonics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with consonant practice. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the difference between a blend and a digraph?

⌄

In a blend you hear every consonant, like s, t and r in string. In a digraph two letters make one new sound, like ph in phone or wh in whale. Thr and shr start with a digraph plus r, which the thr, shr and squ sort points out.

When is the end of a word spelled tch?

⌄

Use tch right after a short vowel, as in catch and sketch. Use ch after a consonant or a vowel team, as in lunch and peach. The ch or tch sort and the pick the spelling page practice this rule.

How are ng and nk different?

⌄

Ng makes one sound, as at the end of sing. Nk sounds like ng plus k, as in pink and trunk. Children sort twelve words by their last two letters, then finish sentences with words like wing and wink.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 16 2nd grade consonant practice sheets have an answer key.
