Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Vowel Team Riddles, Set 1" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RF.2.3.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on phonics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and vowel teams never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Solve six riddles with vowel team answers like leaf, snail and boat, then circle each team. A vowel team is two or more letters that spell one vowel sound. Every answer on this page has one, like oa in goat or ai in mail. The directions on the page read: Read each riddle. Write the answer from the Word Bank on the line. Then, circle the vowel team in the word you wrote. Use each word once. An answer key is included.
Can I use this vowel teams worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade phonics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with vowel teams. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
Which vowel teams are on these sheets?
⌄
Long a is spelled ai and ay, long e is ee, ea and ey, long o is oa, ow and oe, and long i is igh and ie. One sort covers oo, ew and ue, which spell the vowel sound in moon, chew and glue. Two sorts add the silent e spellings a_e and i_e so children can compare them.
How do I help my child choose ai or ay?
⌄
Ai usually sits inside a word, as in rain and paint, and ay comes at the end, as in play and today. The pick the spelling pages ask children to choose the right spelling of words like wait and today, then write the right word under the sentence.
What do children do on the riddle pages?
⌄
They read a clue such as I open a lock, write the answer from the word bank, here key, and circle the vowel team. Some answers, like rainbow, have two teams to circle.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 26 2nd grade vowel teams sheets have an answer key.
