Long I Words in Sentences

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Long I Words in Sentences" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RF.2.3.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on vowels, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and long vowel spelling patterns never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this long vowel spelling patterns worksheet?

⌄

Read the word bank together first and underline the vowel letters. After sorting, have your child read each column aloud. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Finish eight sentences with long i words like bike, night and sky, then circle the pattern. A long vowel says its name. Long i can be spelled with a silent e, with a vowel team (letters that make one sound), or with y at the end of a word. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Then, write the word from the word bank that finishes it. Then, circle the long i pattern in the word you wrote. An answer key is included.

Can I use this long vowel spelling patterns worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade vowels, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with long vowel spelling patterns. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are long vowel spelling patterns?

⌄

They are the letter groups that spell a long vowel sound, like ai and ay for long a or igh and ie for long i. Knowing them helps children read and spell words they have not seen before (RF.2.3.B).

Which patterns are on these sheets?

⌄

Long a is spelled a_e, ai and ay, and long e is ee, ea and y. Long i is i_e, igh, y and ie, long o is o_e, oa and ow, and long u is u_e, ew and ue.

How do I help my child remember which pattern a word uses?

⌄

Sort first, then read the columns aloud. Children start to notice that ay and ow often end a word while ai and oa sit in the middle. The sentence pages then give practice picking the right word.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All ten long vowel pattern sheets have an answer key.

What vowel skills do 2nd graders work on?

⌄

2nd graders tell long and short vowels apart in one syllable words, learn the common vowel team spellings, and read two syllable words with long vowels (RF.2.3.A to RF.2.3.C). They also meet spellings that make the same sound in different ways, like er, ir and ur.

What is the difference between a vowel team and a diphthong?

⌄

A vowel team is two letters that work together for one vowel sound, like ai in snail or ee in sheep. A diphthong is a vowel sound that slides as you say it, like ou in shout or oy in boy. The diphthong pages also include au and aw and the two sounds of oo, as in moon and book.

Which long vowel spelling should my child use?

⌄

Some patterns have a favorite spot in a word. Ay and oy usually come at the end, as in play and toy, while ai and oi come in the middle, as in rain and coin. The sort pages help children notice these patterns, and the sentence pages give practice choosing the right spelling.
