Compare Two Stories About Captain Fluff the Cat

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Compare Two Stories About Captain Fluff the Cat" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RL.3.9. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on compare and contrast, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and compare two stories never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this compare two stories worksheet?

⌄

Read Story 1 and Story 2 back to back, then ask your child what stayed the same. Fill in the middle of the Venn diagram first if differences come more easily. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Compare two original stories about Captain Fluff the cat, a sailing trip and a map, in a Venn diagram. To compare is to tell how things are alike. To contrast is to tell how they are different. The directions on the page read: Read both stories. Think about the characters, the setting, and what happens. Then, turn the page. On page 2: Write three differences in each outside part and three ways they are alike in the middle. Then, circle a letter for 2 and 3. Then, write on the lines for 4. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this compare two stories worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade compare and contrast, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with compare two stories. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What do children compare in two stories?

⌄

They look at the characters, the setting, what happens and what the characters learn. RL.3.9 asks 3rd graders to compare the themes, settings and plots of stories about the same or similar characters.

How do you fill in a Venn diagram?

⌄

Write what only happens in Story 1 in the left circle, what only happens in Story 2 in the right circle, and what both stories share in the middle where the circles overlap.

How long are the stories?

⌄

Each story is about 120 to 140 words, and both fit on page one, so children can look back at either story while they work.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All five sheets have an answer key, with sample answers for the Venn diagram.

What is the difference between compare and contrast?

⌄

To compare is to tell how two things are alike. To contrast is to tell how they are different. A Venn diagram shows both, with what is alike in the middle and the differences in the outside parts.

Why do the two stories have the same characters?

⌄

In 3rd grade, children compare the themes, settings and plots of stories by the same author about the same or similar characters (RL.3.9). Keeping Pip or Captain Fluff in both stories makes it easier to see what changed from one story to the next.

How do children compare two informational texts?

⌄

They write three key points from Text A and three from Text B, answer questions about the texts, then write one fact found only in Text A and one found only in Text B. This is the RI.3.9 skill of comparing the most important points in two texts on the same topic.
