Compare Two Texts About Hummingbirds
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Compare Two Texts About Hummingbirds" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RI.3.9. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on compare and contrast, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and compare two texts never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this compare two texts worksheet?
⌄
Read Text A, then Text B, and ask your child what new thing they learned from the second text. Use the chart to compare. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Compare key points in two original texts about hummingbirds, then write a fact found in only one. To compare two texts is to find what they both tell. To contrast them is to find what only one tells. The directions on the page read: Read Text A and Text B. Both are about the same topic. Then, turn the page. On page 2: Write three key points from each text in the chart. Then, circle the letter of the best answer. Then, write one fact on each line. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this compare two texts worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade compare and contrast, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with compare two texts. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a key point?
⌄
A key point is an important fact in a text. Two texts on the same topic often give different key points, like one text about how hummingbirds eat and another about where they nest.
Why compare two texts on the same topic?
⌄
It shows children that no single text tells everything. Finding what both texts say and what only one says is the RI.3.9 skill.
How do I help my child find a fact in only one text?
⌄
Have your child read the key points chart across. If a fact shows up under Text A but not under Text B, it belongs on the Only in Text A line.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All five sheets have an answer key, with sample key points for the chart.
What is the difference between compare and contrast?
⌄
To compare is to tell how two things are alike. To contrast is to tell how they are different. A Venn diagram shows both, with what is alike in the middle and the differences in the outside parts.
Why do the two stories have the same characters?
⌄
In 3rd grade, children compare the themes, settings and plots of stories by the same author about the same or similar characters (RL.3.9). Keeping Pip or Captain Fluff in both stories makes it easier to see what changed from one story to the next.
How do children compare two informational texts?
⌄
They write three key points from Text A and three from Text B, answer questions about the texts, then write one fact found only in Text A and one found only in Text B. This is the RI.3.9 skill of comparing the most important points in two texts on the same topic.
